Some other men, horses, tractors, wagons reached the farm. An early start recommended a farmer’s grain could be threshed in one morning. Some farmers got its instructions from Dad, who directed them out to a field to start loading the shocks onto that wagons.

The men’s names were Bernier, Kozelka, Ingham, Sutton, Larsen, Gross sales, Mahan, Rosenbaum, Payne, Aspenson, in addition to MacAvery. They wore bib overalls as well as straw hats, and a ton of smoked hand-rolled cigarettes. One or two smoked a pipe clenched into their teeth. They were Languages like german, Norwegian, and English. One or two had accents.

By 15 o’clock, with the dew burned off because of the blazing sun, the many bundles started arriving through the fields. There were 6 or seven teams involving wagons and horses. Loads of farmers brought a tractor and wagon. These were modest tractors, typical for enough time of the late 1940s plus 1950s. Farmall H, Ford 8N, Allis Chalmers D, and the John Deere “Johnny Poppers. ”

Years of experience had taught farmers how much time it would take “to use this farm. ” They emotionally counted the fields involving shocks. They gauged the crop yield from the spacing of the jolts. Close together, good yield, threshing is going to take some time. Shocks spread out, threshing can go fast.

A half dozen wagons with a team of horses, referred to as “rigs, ” could keep your hungry threshing machine occupied. Shutting it down has been wasted time, and moment was everything. They only stopped between loads for any quick greasing with all the different zerks and another time period for noon lunch.

Fradette opened the throttle on the big Minneapolis Moline, and smoke belched away the three-foot exhaust pipe number one. The thresher came to life, the big claw teeth at the conclusion of the tray chute started to advance, gulping up bundles. This tray chain moved, along with the belts and pulleys going turning. The beast was rising with the dead once again!
