I'm working to start a party at a local fetish club.

The following is some information to provide you with some basics regarding parties at the club.

We provide a safe, sane, and consensual environment for our members to socialize, play, explore, and perform individual fetish fantasies.

Arrive at The Club's premises in appropriate street legal attire. Upon entry to the membership area you are encouraged to dress (or undress) as outrageously as you like. The wilder the better...We all love a good show.

Members are allowed to attend, play, and perform fully nude inside the *private membership area.*

The play and performances in our *private membership* area are of a highly sensual nature. Within reasonable limits, The Club allows members the discretion to play/perform without restriction.

Hi to ALL who remember the jewel of the Night Club scene of the Original Goya!

To answer a few questions for the curious above.

Las Novedades Restaurant was the original occupant and builder of the restaurant, it was originally founded in 1890, on the corner of 15th and 7th and burned down and rebuilt in the early century to the present building which was visited by then future president Theodore Roosevelt at the turn of the century. Manuel Menendez operated it as a coffee shop, popular with cigar makers from the Sanchez y Haya factory across the street. The original building burned down in November of 1891, and was rebuilt the following year.

Manuel Garcia Jr. and his wife Clarita took over Las Novedades restaurant in Ybor City in the 1940's and ran it for 30 years.

Benito recalled Las Novedades in its prime.

"It was a beautiful building. They brought in a lot of Goya paintings and marble. It was a very pretty building," she said.

Known as a perfectionist in the kitchen, Mrs. Garcia poured out her heart through her recipes, but also through soulful writing about her love of cooking. Consider this passage from Clarita's Cocina: "My mother was of the belief that a bowl of soup prepared with rich broth, to say nothing of a bowl of Potaje (pottage), gave life to a listless bloodstream. Consequently, the familiar fragrance of the stock pot cooking on the stove was embedded in the walls of the large, warm, cozy kitchen where, as children, we spent so many happy hours."

In the mid Seventies the nearly century old Restaurant closed its doors and was later reopened as El Goya Restaurant which did not last even as fraction as long as its Las Novedades. As I child I visited both and thought it was a terrific place as it was spooky with its underground drive thru valet area that went thru the building a tunnel on the West side of the building, later made into the "Island Bar" during the Frank Cabot "El Goya Mall" days of 1984-1986.

After the restaurant had its run as El Goya, Vince Wilson purchased the building from the building owners the Capitano's of Radiant Oil fame here in Tampa who own a great deal of Ybor property including the block that houses the Italian Club. This is the Goya we remember fondly; the table cloths, old menus, and strange drink glasses that were all left over from the restaurant days were everywhere. It was a restaurant turned nite club overnight. This was the advent of the legendary shows from the original Tampa dragsters at the Show bar, with the Las Vegas feel. It was packed to the walls, and never a weekend or Tuesday night was there without a line to get into the building. Vince Wilson and his parents after running the club and renting the building purchased the building in December of 1981 from Frank Caven, an investor who owned many successful gay bars in Tampa, and in Dallas and Houston Texas, he also owned the building that housed the Cucojo lesbian club later the good old gay staple "Old Plantation" among others in Tampa. Vince could not make a profit and pay the mortgage as well on the property with taxes and insurance that he did not need to pay while he was renting the building. He and his co investors at this point including Robert Fournier, lost the building back to Mr. Caven on March 14, 1984 by foreclosure on the Hillsborough County Courthouse steps, I was there with Carlos Olivera and Raymond Ortman that cold March morning to witness this. Mr. Caven and his Cadre Inc, Company embarked on redoing the El Goya, to a Mall concept and name each bar after one of his clubs he had in the Houston area. They hired Larry Montgomery as General Manager and kept the bar open using the alley entrance and utilizing just the western bar during this 4 month process. Larry Montgomery was kind enough to give us VIP tours of the building during the stages of construction. Then on Thursday July 12th, 1984, the long awaited GRAND opening was upon us. There were limos and more limos as a crowd of over 8,500 came out on a special invitation only grand opening of the "El GOYA MALL" billed as Florida's Largest Entertainment Mall. Then in 1985 and 1986 Mr. Caven sold most of his Tampa Bay area holdings including the Old Plantation and the Goya to a Greek by the name of John Arnaoutakis, known to all as John Takis, to all. This is when the trade names of Tracks and Village station came into play for El Goya and Old Plantation respectively. The OP, had expanded during this time without the proper permits which made the addition to the clubs original floor plan non compliant with the local city of Tampa liquor zoning and cost a lengthy legal battle for John Takis with the city of Tampa, this was never fully resolved and you could only drink alcohol in a 1/3 of the club's floor plan. The neighborhood was against the club always and it became worse when it became Atlanta Nights, in the late 80's and early 90's. Now it was torn down and became a Law Firm called Solomon Tropp. John Takis operated all the clubs until February of 1989, and then he lost all of the properties he had purchased from Frank Caven in 1985 and 1986 to foreclosure to Central Bank of Tampa, who had financed his purchases from Frank Caven. El Goya in March of 1989 was sold to its present owner BROADWAY DEVELOPMENT INC, who are the Capitano Family of the Radiant Oil Co and the Radiant Food stores, they own and lease out the building, they purchased the building for $1,700,000 in 1989. Since then the club has been leased and operated as Tracks, "Pleasuredome” and Czar, with leaseholder changes during the change of lease holders with only Pleasuredome coming in 2nd to the amount of remodeling dollars spent on the building. Frank Caven's "El Goya Mall" concept was the most anticipated and well received on the transformations.

If so, do you remember a handsome, dark haired, 24/25 year old man by the name of Tyler Lime?

At the time Tyler was working for Xerox, at one of the airport sites I believe.

Tyler was a hottie.

I met him in the winter of '78 when he came to Washington, DC, to attend classes at the nearby Xerox Training Center. Regrettably, we parted company after only a few months due to a very confusing, testosterone fueled, escapade that was made permenant by an excess of ego and an absence of judgment.

But despite the abrupt parting, I have thought often of Tyler in the intervening years, forever the tawny skinned young man with the killer smile. Recently I came across some of the letters he had written to me, and was surprised to find that they were still as familiar to me in form and content as they had been upon first reading them nearly 30 years ago. It was then that I decided that I wanted to know more about how life had treated this sweet man that lead with his heart.

I recognize that this site represents, at best, a real shot-in-the-dark, both because of the amount of time that has elapsed, and because of the large number of my contemporaries that did not make it until this point, but if you have any info on Tyler that you'd like to share it would be most appreciated. I can be reached at Rhauser22@earthlink.net. (Please include Tyler's name in the subject so that I don't inadvertantly delete your message as spam.) Any contact info that you have on him, new or old, would be awesome as I have exhausted most of the people find sites on the Web as well as the resources at the Library of Congress to no avail.
Thank you.

I remember the El Goya! (4 replies)

I remember the El Goya back to 1982. It was for both my self, and the group of fifteen or so of my friends who danced and drank there several nights a week, our bar. The El Goya was to Tampa what Studio was to New York -- only it was more underground... and, it was ours! I remember Larry Montgomery; although, at the time, he was nearly an elusive iconic figure. I remember Tony Waddell, the long-time video DJ and sound director, and his lover J.R., of the once-upon-a-time JR's Grill (that served until 2AM, fantastic)!. I remember John Zavosky playing his wicked track mixes on the dance floor, which he made with his equipment at his apartment. He had a penchant for the musically dramatic that was hardly matched during that time. His mixing skills on vinyl were mesmerizing. I miss John.

In 1982, the dance floor was sunken down a level; so, you stepped down two steps onto the dance floor. There was this horrible, caramelized shag rug on the floor around one half of the dance floor, surely made so from the numerous spilled cocktails, and leaking pipes above dripping down on your head. There were beautiful white spindled columns that surrounded most of the dance floor. They supported arches and more decorative architectural work to the second floor. And over the dance floor, the ceiling extended another story taller which was filled full of lights pulsating to the heart-pounding beat.

Jennifer was usually working the door. We were all under age, but there were so many of us coming they let us in. We spent all our money there. I was the only one of age, which was 18 a the time. Chris was marked as our favorite bartender. He made the strongest drinks. I still love running into Chris. We always went to El Goya on Tuesday nights for 'Quarter Drink' night. We would order drinks four at a time! We were there every other night of the week as well; literally, partying high seven nights a week.

The show bar carries what I think to be an unknown treasure; and, I often wonder if anyone has done any history on it. On the walls of the show bar, there are these elegant oil paintings done in the Rococo style on tile, which I understand are linked somehow to an artist named Goya -- hence the bar's name. At the time it was built, I understand that the El Goya was a posh hotel and nightclub in Ybor City - in the heart of Cuban and Italian culture in Tampa. The painted works are near 8' X 10' each (I believe there are six of them on the walls), and each show Spanish aristocrats at leisurely play in a pastoral setting of plenty. They were a metaphor for a wonderful time in my life.

Okay, the absolute beginning for those with teary eyes: My first visit to the El Goya was around 2:30AM on the night of my prom in May, 1982. I finally had enough courage to tell my date we were going inside. There was no one there, it was completely empty. We strolled down the dark entry hallway towards the pounding base of the dance floor; and, when we walked around the entranceway, I heard the DJ playing Donna Summer's Mac Arthur Park Suite (the 17 minute version, girl!). It was heaven! My heaven. That is my theme song, still! We danced and had a drink probably. By the time I got back to my friends the next day, as the leader of my little band of now mostly post-high-school followers, I announced that the El Goya would become our new destination. Yes, Donna Summer. They always say your prom night is a night you'll never forget; and, for me, it was the night that I had found a place where I belonged. I was no longer afraid to explore who I was becoming. Donna Summer, girl!

I remember so many stories, so many scandalous nights. Looking back, over a time with the introduction of MTV videos, New Wave, and the Madonna craze, we were the avant garde crowd - and we dressed the part. We lived our lives inside the walls of the El Goya. Through the years, as the bar kept transforming itself over and over, so did we. Somewhere along the line, the bar lost the columns and the great paintings; and, we lost our innocence. By the early 1990's we had all gone our separate ways and I only occasionally ventured in any more. A new generation had replaced me. Same drag queens, different day.

I keep hearing about an El Goya come back. Surely, myself and those left around will be appreciated with free drink tickets. But it can never really come back; although, I am always one up for a good party! Keep me informed.
