Following is an excellent manual by Zizaran that clocks in at a whopping 43 minutes. But surely there must be a quick set of hints for fresh Path of Exile gamers who just need to kill monsters and not spend hours exploring? There's. Sort of.
Among the wonderful things about Fall of Oriath's launch (which attracts Path of Exile around version 3.0) is that sweeping equilibrium changes and new skills means the whole metaPOE game has been thrown out. The community has created a great deal of new builds to play with. After doing some searching, I came across YouTuber Engineering Eternity with excellent beginner build manuals. Though there's still some jargon to learn, Engineering Eternity solves one of the biggest problems with many guides I browse by walking through the leveling process. Instead of just showing you what the construct will look like at the endPOE match, he breaks down the guide into important leveling landmarks, giving you smaller, more digestible goals to work toward.
I went with his Scorching Ray Necromancer build, which revolves around melting enemies below a blast of fire and allowing its damage over time ability finish them off while I proceed into the next group. It is an excellent build I urge anyone use because it isn't too reliant on equipment. I still felt confused but I finally needed a lantern that could illuminate the next few steps I had to take. That made Path of Exile considerably more accessible, and I started to see why it's such zealous fans.
One of the greatest concepts in Path of Exile is its own passive tree and ability gems. Every time you level up, you unlock things that you may use to uncover nodes in the passive skill tree. Minor nodes offer slight upgrades to your stats, even while important nodes unlock strong passive skills that fundamentally change the way you perform.
This works in concert with skill gems, which slot to pieces of equipment and give your character spells and abilities to use in combat (unlike Diablo 3, that they do not have any given abilities). Items will often have numerous gem slots, and sometimes they are linked together. When I set a skill like Orb of Storms of cheap poe currency into a slot and then link it with Curse on Strike, Flammability and Vulnerability, each moment my Orb of Storms strikes an enemy it will also apply both of those curses into them. It's basically an extremely robust spell-crafting system.
